Up first is Jorge Lopez, one of our 2015 Teacher of the Year finalists who teaches mathematics at Providence Cristo Rey High School.
When did you know teaching was for you?
I knew that teaching was for me in my senior year of high school. I did multiple sports camps for kids and was a summer camp counselor at the YMCA, confirming that my purpose was to have a positive influence on our youth.
What’s been your most memorable moment in the classroom?
One of my colleagues and I had epic "Catch Phrase" battles between our Honors classes on our scheduled fun days. Kids really do say some of the darndest things, especially when a timer is going. Oh and 2 weeks ago, that colleague became my wife!
How has Teachers’ Treasures helped you and your students?
My students and I are blessed to have Teachers' Treasures in our lives. They are now much more organized and prepared for class because of the binders, paper, writing utensils, and other goodies we have collected. They can focus on what's important, learning.
If you weren’t teaching, where would you be?
I would probably be working at a minor/major league professional team in the offices.
What do you wish more people knew about teachers?
Real teachers love what they do. Maybe they don't like it every day, but we have one of the most important jobs other than being a parent. We are molding the minds of our future into becoming a positive member of society. We are grinding 50-60 hours a week to make sure our students have a positive experience every single day.
Any words of wisdom for those just starting out in their career or considering education as their career?
We are the ninjas of the working world. We are rarely seen on TV or praised for major accolades, but we take great pride in our students' outcomes. Personally, I am honored to lead our young adults during one of their most important times in their lives.
Thanks so much for sharing more about your experiences as an educator, Jorge!
Stay tuned for teacher features in the coming months.
